How Much Should I Work?

Typically PhD G1 students take several classes in their first year, so the amount of time spent on work is similar to undergraduate life plus some added research to develop your project ideas. Masters students will likely have similar schedules as G1 PhD students. After the first few semesters of your PhD you should expect to spend most of your time on research. Most students work at least 40 hours a week. Often students spend 60+ hours per week. The amount of time spent on your research will be largely influenced by your lab and how efficient your are. It is important to find a work-life balance. Obtaining a PhD is typically ~5 years, so burning out in your first year is not ideal. Make sure you have enough time to do things you enjoy.
