Navigating vacation can be difficult when first starting. It is very dependent on your advisor, so the best way to figure out how much vacation you can take would be to ask lab-mates. Typically advisors understand that vacations are important to clear your head and stay motivated. However difficult it may be, it is necessary to have a clear conversation with your advisor about vacations. Generally 2-3 weeks vacation seems to be a typical amount.
